A closer look at young and energetic Nepalese squad..

Nepalese football is in a transitional phase right now. ANFA recently appointed Abdullah Almutairi as the head coach and he seems to favour youngsters as wee saw against Iraq. He went with 6 debutants in the matchday squad and 15 of them were aged 23 or under. With Nepalese fixture for World Cup qualifiers right around the corner many of us don’t know about the players. Let’s take a look at the players and figure out what they are about.

Goalkeepeers

Kiran Chemjong(C)

The 31 year old Nepalese captain has been ever present since he made his debut back in 2008. The gloveman is probably the most reliable player in the squad. He commands his goal very well and has pretty good reflexes for his size. Kiran has won I-league once (2017-18) and won Dhivehi Premier League(2018). He played for Dhangadi Fc in the Nepal Super League.

Deep Karki

The 23 year old Pokhara Thunders gloveman seems to have replaced Bikesh Kuthu for the no.2 in the Nepalese squad. He has not made his international debut yet but has been in the squad since the Three Nations Cup. The Pokhara Thunders gloveman kept 3 clean sheets and conceded only 4 goals from his 6 games in 2021 NSL.

Bishal Sunuwar

The 19 year old gloveman is 3rd choice goalkeeper for Nepal. He has a lot to learn and will relish his time with the senior squad. The FC Chitwan player played 5 games and kept 1 clean sheet while conceding 8 goals.

Defenders

Rohit Chand

The 29 year old centre back is Nepal’s best centre back. He made his debut back in 2009 at the age of just 16 yrs and 22 days. The defender has been ever reliable ever since his debut. He currently plays for Persija Jakarta in Indonesia. He has a high reputation in Indonesia winning the Most Valuable Player award back in 2018.

Ananta Tamang

The 23 year old centre back has been a long term partner of Rohit Chand in the centre of the field. He made his debut back in 2015 and has been a regular starter since 2016. He compliments Rohit Chand very well and has a good passing range.

Suman Aryal

The 21 year old left back has recently been used as a back up option but he got the chance in Abdullah Al Mutairai first game in charge. He made his debut back in 2018 as a 18 year old.

Dinesh Rajbanshi

The 23 year old Right back has been Nepal first choice Right back for a long time now. He is a dynamic player who is good going forward and is solid defensively. The Dhangadi Fc player played all 6 games in the recently concluded NSL.

Bikash Khawas

The 19 year old right back is a young prospect right back for Nepal. He made his debut back in 2020 against Bangladesh. He is a handy player who can play in both right back and centre back position.

Gautam Shrestha

The 21 year old right back mad his debut in the recent friendly match against Iraq. The right back position has got a lot of competition so lets see if he can make it his own. He played for Pokhara Thunders in the recently concluded NSL.

Midfielders

Pujan Uparkoti

The 25 year old played in the defensive midfield role in the recent friendly match against Iraq. He made his debut in 2020 against Bangladesh. He played for Dhangadi FC in the recently concluded NSL.

Suraj Jeu Thakuri

He is a young player who can ne a good player foe Nepal in the future. He played for Biratnagar City in the recently concluded NSL.

Bishal Rai

The 27 year old midfielder made his debut back in 2013 and has been in and out of the squad ever since. He has the chance to be a main stay in the starting eleven showcasing his talent and experience he has gathered. He played for Dhangadi FC in the recently concluded NSL.

Arik Bista

The 21 year old has recently entered the picture and is capable of controlling the midfield. He made his debut in 2020. He played for Lalitpur City Fc in the recently concluded NSL.

Santosh Tamang

The 26 year old attacking midfielder had a very good season in NSL for Biratnagar City scoring 4 goals. He made his debut in 2019 and has not been a main stay in the squad.

Sunil Bal

The 23 year old right midfielder is probably the best Nepalese player technically. He has got good feets and has a good vision. He has a really great cross in him. The Biratnagar City player made his debut in 2016 but has not been able to make the position his own.

Forwards

Nawayug Shrestha

The 30 year old striker came bursting into the scene back in 2016 when he scored 3 hat-tricks in a month. Everybody thought that he was going to be the main man of Nepal but he hasn’t scored since 2018. Due to his poor run of form he hasn’t been able to claim the no.9 position. He played for Pokhara Thunders in the NSL scoring 2 goals.

Suman Lama

The 25 year old striker has been used mainly as a backup. He made his debut back in 2016 but hasn’t been conviencing enough. The striker returned to the squad after a long time missing from it. He played for Butwal Lumbini FC in the recently concluded NSL.

Abhishek Rijal

The 21 year old striker blew up during Asian games 2019 and helped Nepal win the gold medal scoring a handful of goals. He has not been that conviencing on the international level only ever scoring 1 goal. He currently plays for Aizwal FC in the I-League.

Aashish Lama

The 24 year old striker seems to be a backup option for Nepal. If he wants to get into the starting eleven then he has to prove himself to the new coach. He made his debut in 2019. He played for Butwal Lumbini FC in the recently concluded NSL.

Anjan Bista

The 23 year old is the go to man for Nepal right now. After making his debut back in 2014 he has played most of the games for Nepal. He has not been that conviencing in front of goal only ever scoring 2 for national side. He played for Lalitpur City Fc in the recently concluded NSL.

Manish Dangi

The 19 year old forward made his debut against Iraq and scored a delicious goal. He seems to be a good dribbler and has excellent finishing. The forward played for Lalitpur City Fc in the recently concluded NSL.
